So Much Art, So Little AoM

I'm so pumped about art lately, I'm drawing so many new things! But... I admit, none of it has been my comic.

I really want to keep working on my comic, I really do! I just keep getting burnt out about it because every scene I draw requires architecture... which I seriously cannot do, for the life of me.

I'm seriously considering looking for someone who will help me draw the architecture in these panels. I'd even give them money- though it wouldn't be very much as I don't really have a steady income. but I'm seriously willing to do anything to get someone to help me with the perspective, architecture, etc.

Let me know if you or anyone you know happens to be willing. I really want to work on this story. I just have to swallow my pride and admit that I can't do it by myself.

I'll continue trying to work on it in the meantime, but, let me know what you guys think...

AoM's Return

I've decided it's time to return to Age of Mortality.

I've scrapped the 3 most recent pages in favor of a better-written version, plus I decided to return to doing it in color now.

A few things to note:

1. The novelized version of the comic will still be going up. I'll be refining Chapter 1 soon and posting Chapter 3. Hopefully I can get all the chapters online in a timely manner so you guys can read and critique. I decided to post the novelized script of AoM for you guys to experience because I feel like AoM is a story that needs to be told, and I don't want to have to wait so long to get it out. Of course, the script WILL spoil the comic, so if you are okay with waiting for the comic to come out then don't read it, but if you're curious about AoM's story and just want to read it, then that's the avenue for you.

2. The comic version of the story- the version it is meant to be seen- will be updating weekly, if I can.

For those of you who follow me who may still be interested in my original story... I feel you guys need a long-overdue update.

I do want to return to AOM. I keep giving it up because I get disillusioned, depressed, and generally don't have enough time.

But if you guys still are interested in it... I will try to hold myself accountable and continue to write the novelized versions of the comic, and hopefully I can get the entire story down for your enjoyment, then proceed to make it as a comic, the format it is intended to be seen.

So... if anyone still wants to see it. I hope to return to it shortly. And actually stick to finishing it this time.

It will be released as a written novel first, and then the graphic novel will be continued when I have time to translate it into the medium in which it was meant to be seen.

Purpose
Age of Mortality is my life's work, and it exists because it has been a story I've been wanting to tell since childhood. The concept has been in my mind long before any of the characters came into being. Technically it has been around since I was 9. The characters- at least the main character- came into being when I was around 14. I have been working on the story on-and-off ever since.

It is a philosophical tale, containing a lot of symbolism. Much of the story is intended to reflect human nature, present complex worldview issues, and to encourage readers to reflect on the concept of their own reality. The fantasy backdrop of the story, and even the overviews of the characters themselves, are simply surface-level aspects of the story, and the real complexities are found within your own interpretation of the symbolism and what the characters represent, and what their journey reflects.

I have reasons for writing the story and I know what everything represents. My intention is not to create a story where you struggle to find it's meaning though. My intention is simply to create an enjoyable story. Whether or not you want to analyze it's meaning is up to you. And if you want to know what I meant with it, I'd love to dialogue with you. Feel free to communicate with me as you read the story if you are curious about any of my personal intent with certain scenes, dialogues, and characters.

Overview

In the cursed world of Ailevian, immortal High King Olgrich is at war with the Lord of the North, Zairen. In order to cure the curse, Olgrich forged mystical Medallions for his citizens, Medallions which allowed their wearers, not by choice, to use magic. One such Medallion-wearer named Kaikuro Raoson, driven by a desire to pay for crimes of his past, is given a task by Olgrich for what he believes is a quest for personal redemption. However, the journey in which he embarks on becomes far more than what he anticipated. His task is to guide and guard the world's last living immortal besides Olgrich and Zairen, Arrin, in hopes that he will take upon the burden of the world and assist Olgrich in the cleansing of the curse.  

Characters

[link] Kaikuro Raoson is the main character of the story. He is a stuttering, scarred, scrawny man who dropped into the capital city of Doumaar from the distant land of Raisuran for untold reasons. On the surface, he is a pleasant and gentle man, although a bit awkward and neurotic. Internally, he struggles with extreme guilt and issues of self-worth that drive his actions to ridiculous extents that completely disregard any sense of healthy self-preservation.

[link] Kaabel Sori is Kaikuro's best friend. A laid-back, lazy, good-natured fellow, Kaabel is a healthy and extroverted young man who has it too easy in life. His experiences have shaped him to believe inside, even though he might not admit it, that everything is alright in the world without him. Used to living under the wing of his successful parents, Kaabel has yet to know true pain, a reality that he inevitably experiences alongside Kaikuro.

[link] Indara Neamahi is significantly connected to Kaikuro, though little is known of the relation. A rather plump Dragon from Aeraida, Indara entered Doumaar around the same time Kaikuro did. Indara perfectly lives up to her Raisuranian name, Indara, translated to "being of love." Indara lives to love others, her life selflessly devoted to the care and protection of others. Though a bit grumpy at times, she is the picture of motherhood and affection which can sometimes be taken to an unhealthy extreme. She is completely unable to punish others for wrongdoings against herself.

Rayene Wrensong is Doumaar's most skilled surgeon. Known as a cold, calloused and jaded woman, Rayene treats her medical cases with tact and professionalism, and little else. It is known that she is from Ostale, and had escaped from Zairen's reign. She still bears Zairen's mark on her left cheek, permanently burned into her flesh, though she openly denies allegiance to him and curses his name. At the same time, she is known to not have a Medallion. While she is not particularly liked by the cityfolk of Doumaar, and it took her a long time to gain her positive medical reputation, the city cannot help but to recognize her as a life-saver. Over 90 percent of her patients are cured under her skilled hands, a statistic that is impossible to go unnoticed in a world where so many other surgeons fail.

Arrin is the world's last immortal alive, besides Olgrich and Zairen. Accursed and unaffiliated with either Zairen or Olgrich, Arrin is apathetic about the fate of the world and ignores picking sides. However, while he will claim to not care about either side, the fact is that he is excessively horrified of the both Curse and Medallions. He watched Olgrich kill his own parents in self-defense when they were sent by Zairen as assassins to gain Olgrich's trust and murder him. He has also watched horrifying bloodshed under the tooth and claw of the Accursed. If he would choose Olgrich's side, he would be the only other being in the world capable of making Medallions and weeding out the Curse in the world. However, if he fell to the side of the Accursed, he would be an unstoppable force, and the only person besides Zairen capable of killing Olgrich... with exception to the fabled and lost Mortality Blades.

Age of Mortality: Comic Lore and Culture

World Information

Here you'll find information about the lore of Ailevian. You don't have to read this to understand the comic, but it will help.

Geography and Culture

The continent of Ailevian was once one unified country, though after many years, cultures spread and established their own countries. The "original" country is considered to be Raisuran, and the Raisuranian language is still used as a basis for much of the world's language. (For example, the names of the seasons are in Raisuranian.)

Now, there are five countries. Raisuran in the South, Aeraida further north, Lemaar in the center, Zepharri to the East, and Ostale to the northwest. There are three major languages spoken: Raisuranian in Raisuran and Aeraida, Lemaarian (otherwise known as Central) in Lemaar and southern Zepharri, and Ostalan in Ostale and northern Zepharri.

There are three races of beings in Ailevian, Humans, Dragons, and the Immortals.

There were once many Immortals, though now all but three were wiped out, and the race is virtually extinct. There are only three immortals left alive today. The first is High King Olgrich, who governs over Doumaar and sets the laws for all Medallion-allied kingdoms. The second is Zairen of the North, who sets the laws for his Accursed territories. Lastly, there is Arrin, an Immortal boy who is unaffiliated with either the Curse or Medallions, and lives under Olgrich's protection.

Dragons are also rare, and their Accursed forms (known as Wyverns) are much more common than those with Medallions. The ratio of Dragons with Medallions to Wyverns are roughly 30/70. This statistic was once much more balanced, but many Dragons died as a result of the Great Dragon Purge. This was a lengthy war that took place in the Teeth of Raisuran.

Humans are the most common, the spread of those with Medallions to those who are Accursed are roughly 40/60.


Curse vs. Medallions

Curse.
The "Curse" in Ailevian was introduced by Zairen when he chose to introduce evil. The world of Ailevian didn't even have words in its language for "evil" before Zairen brought it into being. The "Evils" of Ailevian include things such as murder, lying, and stealing: basically, all thing which cause harm upon others. It came as such a shock to those living in Ailevian when evil was birthed. When the world was swallowed up by this curse, every being born into the world became cursed: no exception. The curse inhabiting every person allows them to transform into some kind of creature when they commit evil. Transformation is a horrifying process to some people, and a delightful one for others. Some people decide to remain in their transformed state perpetually.

RULES:

  • If you're born, you're cursed. No exception.

  • You don't always transform when committing evil. Some people can go years without ever transforming. However, the curse is still within you.

  • Transformation can become voluntary. However, this is a learned skill. Most people transform without knowing how or meaning to. Those who choose to embrace their curse can unlock the ability to transform at will- and stay that way, if they wish.

  • There is no "set" appearance for a human's cursed form, though it is usually dictated loosely by racial heritage. All humans appear like some kind of furred animal. All Wyverns are some kind of natural disaster.


LAWS:

  • Cursed humans are allowed to live in Medallion-allied territories, on the conditions that they do not transform within city limits. If they do, but don't commit crime, they are fined. If they do while committing crime, they suffer jail time. Murder or attempted murder result in punishment of death. (Such rules have sparked multiple "Accursed Rights" activist groups and although they involve typically non-violent protests, some can become very unruly.)

  • Cursed humans who live in Curse-allied cities must bear the Mark of Zairen on their faces somewhere immediately visible, either tattooed, cut, or burned into their skin. If they do not abide by this rule, they are jailed or killed depending on the discretion of the law.

  • Cursed Dragons, known as "Wyverns", are much more unpredictable than Cursed Humans and are not allowed within any city, Medallion-allied or Curse-allied. They have little control over their transformations, and their transformed state is much like a living, breathing natural disaster. They cannot be controlled by Zairen and are thus not recruited into his armies.



Medallions.
In order to cure the curse, the pure Immortals of Ailevian forged the mystical "Medallions", magic jewelry that, when worn by a cursed wearer, eliminates the curse in them forever: no exception. Even if the medallion was removed by the wearer afterwards, they are not re-cursed. The Medallions allow their wearers mysterious magical benefits. The magic cannot be controlled by a Medallion-bearer. Each Medallion has a special, specific "gift" given to their wearer, and they typically have a certain kind of magic they usually grant to their wearer unpredictably. Still, they don't seem to be limited to anything.

RULES:

  • A Medallion can be removed by its wearer, but it CANNOT be removed by a 3rd party. A forced attempt to remove a Medallion will electrocute the 3rd party, sometimes fatally.


  • If a wearer gives his Medallion willingly to an Accursed, and the Accursed puts on that Medallion, the previous wearer will die.


  • If a Medallion wearer removes his Medallion, he cannot experience the Medallion's magic anymore. If he puts it back on, he will.


  • Medallions offer both passive and active magical benefits and cannot be controlled willingly by the wearer. The magic is completely reliant on the wearer's own faith in their powers. No exceptions.


  • Medallion-wearers are not immune to evil, and they can still commit evil. The only difference between them and the Accursed is that they are not cursed, and can experience magic.


STAGES:
Medallions go through 3 stages of development when they are worn. There can be any amount of time between stage 1 and 2, from days to years.  Some people never advance past the first stage. Stage 3 is very rare, almost impossible to reach.


  • Purification: the Medallion eliminates the curse from the wearer. This happens to everyone when the Medallion is worn, no exception.


  • Revelation: the Medallion glows for the first time, revealing its passive magical gift to the wearer, such as Wisdom, and works magic through the wearer.


  • Sanctification: the Medallion is always glowing, the wearer at his full height of connection with the Medallion. Magic works through the wearer almost constantly, to the point where it almost appears to an untrained eye that the wearer is controlling the magic, but is not. He is simply very connected with the Medallion, able to anticipate the magic that he is gifted with.



LAWS:

  • New Medallion recipients in Medallion-allied cities must go through a Medallion ceremony, in which the records of their birth and existence in the city are destroyed and replaced with new laws. The wearer can even change their name, if they so wish. Legally, they are a new person.


  • Medallion-wearers are either killed on sight in Curse-allied cities, or captured and sold as slaves.

  • If a Medallion-wearer commits a crime, they are punished depending on the magnitude of the crime, however, they are legally never given the death sentence even for murder. Instead, they are jailed and detained for a significant amount of time. (Sometimes, though, this law is broken.)



POLITICS:


There are many differing political views held throughout Ailevian. The ones listed below are the most common beliefs, though there are more.

Firstly, a bit of background. It is strictly illegal for Medallion-Bearers to live in Zairen's countries. They are either killed on sight or sold into slavery if they are seen in Zairen's borders. Therefore, the amount of Medallion-holders living in Zairen's countries are extremely low, and their politics are not explored below.

It is NOT illegal for Accursed to live in Medallion-Allied territories, and this is where many of the political issues rise.

Exclusivist Medallion-Bearers
This is the viewpoint held by approximately 30 percent of Medallion-bearers.
    1. They believe that all government jobs, especially those of high authority, should be limited to Medallion-bearers only. No Accursed should be allowed significant positions within the government.
    2. Because of the previous rule, they believe the government can, and should, have the power to regulate significant portions of citizen life, moreso than most people are comfortable with. They believe that weeding out Accursed presence in significant jobs makes it so that the government knows, and does, what is best for the people.
        3. They tolerate Accursed presence in Medallion-allied towns, but they have difficulty working and living alongside Accursed. Because of this, Exclusivist Medallion-Bearers tend to segregate themselves from Accursed presence in cities.  
Exclusivists are somewhat controversial. They are sometimes criticized for being too strict and too unaccepting of Accursed. They are criticized as being harsh and unloving. However, this stereotype isn't always the case. In fact, many Exclusivists are very kind and caring towards Accursed, but they prefer not to dwell among them due to differing beliefs too strongly. Accursed tend to dislike Exclusivists all the same, and sometimes feel threatened or hated by them as a group. Still, there are cases where individuals recognize each other as friends amidst the complexities of their political beliefs.

Inclusivist Medallion-Bearers
  This is the viewpoint held by approximately 40 to 50 percent of Medallion-bearers.
   1. They believe government jobs should be open to Medallion-Bearers and Accursed alike, but only if the Accursed adheres to strict policies in the workforce- it is very easy for them to be fired if they are not careful.
        2. They believe the government should have little say in how civilians run their lives. They are comfortable living how they like, and not being bothered by political issues. They rarely express themselves very strongly.
        3. They live and work comfortably among Accursed peoples. However, they tend to favor working with other Medallion-bearers. Depending on the individual, some may be uncomfortable working a job with an Accursed, but they do not segregate themselves in the residential districts.  

   Inclusivists tend to be the most "laid back" of the political parties. There is sometimes controversy surrounding them, but it rarely escalates into heated debate. It is generally accepted and common to be an Inclusivist. Accursed tend to not have much an opinion about Inclusivists, either.  

Restorist Medallion-Bearers

  This is the viewpoint held by approximately 20 to 30 percent of Medallion-Bearers.
    1. They believe that Accursed and Medallion-Bearers alike should have equal opportunities in the workforce.
         2. They choose to live in densely populated Accursed sections of towns and cities. Sometimes, they even decide to leave Medallion-Allied cities to live in Accursed settlements.
         3. They largely dislike higher authorities and prefer to segregate themselves completely from government situations, oftentimes having anarchist beliefs. They are not, however, violent. They oftentimes involve themselves in peaceful rallies and protests.
They are the most controversial political party. Many Medallion-Bearers dislike Restorists, yet many also find them inspiring.
Restorists are often criticized by being too much like the Accursed, and too easy to fall prey to doing evil things. Since they are already cured of the Curse, they don't transform into Accursed themselves, and some people argue this is the only difference between most Conformists and Accursed.   On the flipside, Restorists are sometimes praised for their tolerance and ability to approach and understand Accursed people. Because of their influence, many Accursed peoples have had Medallions made for them, and have accepted them. Accursed peoples tend to like Restorists very much.



Conformist Accursed

Conformist Accursed are doomed to face oppression wherever they go, yet it is a life they would rather have considering the alternatives. They make up about 20-30 percent of Accursed population. They feel oppressed by Zairen, and thus, many of them have made personal decisions to flee the Northern territories and settle in Medallion-allied territories.

Conformists dislike transforming and they prefer to remain in their human state and work quietly and comfortably among the Medallion-bearers. They face a lot of opposition depending on the people they deal with, but they still prefer to face opposition from Medallion-bearers, then to live under the laws and traditions of Zairen's cultures, or among the Truebloods.

Activist Accursed are a sub-sect of Conformist Accursed. About 10  percent of Conformists become Activists. They have felt the weight of oppression and are tired of it. They are known to protest and rally in political issues, and strive to bring more rights to the Accursed people. They sometimes rally alongside Restorists. They are almost always peaceful, but some cults have risen up and some Accursed are willing to become violent in order to achieve freedom for their people.

Transforming within Medallion-allied cities is forbidden, yet they are not treated extremely harshly for it depending on the case. Most cases of transformation are harmless and don't result in danger or harm, however, when it does, the cases are treated with greater severity.

Pure Accursed

  The Pure Accursed are those who live in Zairen's cities, and make up about 50 percent of Accursed population. They are called "pure" by Zairen's laws, because they recognize the power in their birthright, and by Zairen's laws, every Accursed is technically a "pure" creature. In order to become a legal citizen of Zairen's cities, however, one must have the Mark of Zairen tattooed, scarred, or burned into their skin. This solidifies their citizenship and Zairen's authority over them. (It is nothing other than symbolic. There is no magical significance behind it.)

Transforming into accursed within city-limits is accepted in some cases, but mostly restricted. Those who lose control of themselves are penalized and harshly punished. It is extremely important to train every day to gain control over the beast within. Zairen heavily emphasizes this control, as it maintains civilization and restricts transformations to times when it is accepted, especially when citizens are drafted into his military.

Trueblood Accursed
  The Trueblood Accursed dislike Zairen and they dislike the Medallion-Bearers. Approximately 30 percent are Truebloods. They have either left Zairen's cities or left the Medallion-allied territories and started colonies of their own. They recognize their "true roots" as coming from the wild earth, that their ability to transform into a beast is a blessing, and that they should relish in it. They prefer to stay in their beast form perpetually, and place no restrictions on transformations.
Many Accursed would describe Truebloods as savage and animalistic.

Redoing... again...

Art block has finally given way to inspiration.

I am determined to pick up Age of Mortality again, however, it calls for another Chapter 1 Rewrite and comes with some character redesigns... yes, I'm redesigning Kaikuro again, but my interests have changed stylistically.

At least I'm not going to redo the prologue.

I'm remaking the cover page of Chapter 1, so it's going to be put up soon.

This is hard. I usually have recurring dreams that I can breathe underwater so this is probably what I'd end up with.

I answered the above question without reading this one xDDD But hmm... I probably wouldn't, because what's done is done. Mostly I want time control so I can pause or fast forward, not rewind. :P

I like a lot of fictional characters, and it depends on my mood and what I've been watching lately, so it changes a lot.
However, I have to say currently my favorite fictional universe is the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I love the atmosphere and the development of the plot and characters in that series.

8. Any particular person you would die to meet? (Someone you respect/admire. Can be alive or dead.)
I can't think of any right now. I'll get back to you on this.

First off I want to thank everyone who posted on my previous journal. I've meant to reply to each of you individually but I haven't gotten around to it... but thank you. When I made that journal I was pretty panicky over something stupid I said but maybe it wasn't so stupid in retrospect. I don't know.

At any rate. I'm working on AOM.

I know it's been what, almost a year since I updated it? 6 months? IDK. I'm sorry for the long unexplained hitaus.

It's coming back Saturday, if nothing gets in my way. If not Saturday, Sunday. I WILL get this up.

Hanging out with awkward people helps me realize just how extraordinarily awkward I really am.

So here I am, at college. Trying to adjust to this new world that I've found myself in, after being homeschooled all my life and living in near-constant social seclusion. Luckily, this particular college also has quite a few homeschooled people who are awkward, yet very interesting. I happen to hang out with this interesting group of people.  It seems whenever I'm with them my awkwardness is magnified to embarrassing levels. It's just that, whenever I AM with these guys, I open up, and when I open up, stuff slips out that I never thought I'd say.

They know pretty much all my secrets and all my flaws and all my weird quirks after just a few weeks of talking to me. And one of them is pretty loquacious so he doesn't hold much back.  His talkativeness magnifies my talkativeness to really huge lengths.

I'm sitting here regretting how much I've opened up and regretting a few things I've said. They weren't much, just things that slipped out casually but may come back to bite me. Thing is, they were just weird things that I should never say. Things that, looking back now, I realize just how stupid it was to mention and, well... it may have some long-term repercussions, though who knows.

I guess the reason why I'm writing this journal is to put something new on my front page, to express that I am, in fact, alive- and to chastise myself for my ridiculous behavior as of late. How can I be less-awkward? How can I stop saying things that are extraordinarily silly?

I really need to learn how to talk to people.

I totally missed an update for my graphic novel and I've been hoping I'd never do that with this new version of the story. I'm really sorry everyone. The page is half-finished and I am still wrestling with the script after it was pointed out how atrociously bad it was. (Thanks ~Kondrikthus XP)

Anyway, the real reason why I missed the update was I've been feeling kinda pathetic and sick and bleh lately. >.< Buuut HOPEFULLY I will be able to finish the page some time tonight, and HOPEFULLY make it look like it belongs with the other pages. O.o

Wanting to do Bad Fanfiction Readings

So, I've been wanting to try my hand at Dramatic Readings of Bad Fanfictions. I've been watching a few on Youtube and I think they are hilarious.

The problem is, I don't have the time or patience to browse Fanfiction.net for bad fanfictions, so I was thinking of making it easier on myself and... doing dramatic readings of my OWN bad fanfictions! The ghosts of my past!

I have written some horribly bad Lord of the Rings, Zelda, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Halo fanfictions in my distant past, and I have dug up a few of the eeeevil documents and I think that this can actually be Bad Fanfiction gold. XD

Is anyone remotely interested in checking them out if I put them on Youtube? :P Is it not funny if I actually wrote the fanfictions I'm reading? Is it only funny if Dramatic Readings are of other people's bad work? Let me know your thoughts so I can figure out if this is actually worth doing or not. :P



If so, which one should I do first?

1. A really short, unfinished, silly Legend of Zelda fanfiction about a dragon named Reki?

Sorry for the really depressing journal. I just like, ugh. Every time I walk out on the porch I miss him and then there is this kind of bird that lives next to my house and it has this tweet sound that sounds like Tiger's little greeting meow. It's just... bleh. >.<

I need music!

I am currently putting together a Youtube playlist containing a lot of songs of a certan genre and general mood + feel that I think reflects Age of mortality.

I really want more songs that can go in here!

Basically, I'm looking for Celtic or Irish themed music, that is somewhat upbeat or powerful, or emotional. It doesn't HAVE to be Celtic or Irish, and it doesn't have to be upbeat (I have some slow songs on that list too) but I want that general mood + feel. If you listen to a few of the songs on that playlist you'll get a general idea of what I'm looking for.

Also, I'd hate to do this, but I'd like to ask for no recommendations from Tangled or How to Train Your Dragon- I already have the tracks that I want from those film scores on the playlist, and I want to keep things with a lot of variety and not too many film scores from the same movies. Tryin' to keep it around 2 each from the same movie.

O.o That would be just wrong. Kara's like, 10. No, they wouldn't. XD

YES BECAUSE HE IS FREAKIN' OLGRICH!!!

Koraar and Ssvaric are both muscle-men and Kaikuro is a bit of a limp noodle... so whoever's side Kaikuro is on, he wouldn't make any difference at all, he'd just get tugged around helplessly. XD As far as Zairen and Zaoh, they are also somewhat strong- Zaoh is physically stronger than Zairen... and Kara, being like a 10 year old girl, wouldn't make any difference either... so basically it's Koraar and Ssvaric versus Zairen and Zaoh, and... uugh, I'd say Koraar's side would win that. Maybe.

Artonai would be freaking out, he is terrified of fires, and he would keep going. Kaikuro, if he wanted, could find his own way out.

Everyone would know it is probably poisoned or something. In fact, I don't even know why they'd show up. XDDD Even less so, I can't see Zairen cooking. XDDDD

Kaabel, the most, because they have similar outgoing personalities. Zaoh, the least, because Zaoh tends to be too B.A. for his tastes.

Here is a quick little pointless "get to know your character" thing I found, I forgot where. >.<

Using Kaikuro, and assuming this applies if he has lived in modern-day.

1. Assuming this character enjoyed video games, what specific titles would they play?

Kaikuro = Casual Gamer. If he was exposed to video games he'd be drawn to pointless stuff like Bejeweled. :P This is because he really doesn't care that much about video games and would rather spend his time on more productive things.

2. Which books have they read? Which was their favourite? Which did they enjoy the least?

Kaikuro would be an avid reader and attracted to poetry and classics. He likes classical things, because he is drawn more towards the style.

3. Your character's favourite animal? Would they want to be this animal? (Animal characters don't count)
Kaikuro likes birds, but no, he would not want to be them. He enjoys watching animals, but does not really have any pets. He has a beast of burden which he uses when he works in the farms, but he doesn't really treat it like a "pet" (though he does care about it and he takes good care for it.)

As with books, Kaikuro would enjoy classical music and some folk music. He likes to be relaxed and he likes gentle, soothing tones.

Kaikuro has a soft spot for candy- though it is an "affordable" luxury, he doesn't often buy himself candy, but when he does, he usually gets himself the tarty, fruity hard candy. His 'sweet tooth' quirk isn't something people really know about him and... I rarely tell anyone anyway, so, hah. Since you read happened to read this insanely long journal entry you've just been treated to a little-known fact about Kaikuro. Yaaay.

Story Stuff
This is all about age of Mortality; I am not fully answering these questions for fear of spoilage, but I will give some.

1. What are your personal thoughts/opinions regarding symbolism?
Oh myyyy... I love slipping in symbols and metaphors into my stories ALL THE TIME, in fact, that is one of my goals with Age of Mortality is the symbolizing. I wonder how much of it people will catch.

2. What genre(s) is your story?
It is generally a fantasy with a few mild steampunk elements. However, it has a lot of other themes such as adventure, drama, and psychological.

3. Give a very brief description of your story.

It is set in the cursed world of Ailevian where only the supernatural powers of the Medallions can cure a cursed person. One of the three surviving men of the Immortal race, King Olgrich, is the only person capable of creating Medallions. He desires to destroy the evil curse forever, but there are a few things that are in his way, and he needs help. He choses Kaikuro.

Kaikuro is a man who is content to merely exist without facing life and moving forward. But when his king calls him to take on a task he would never expect, he is forced to live his life and analyze himself in a new way, or else he will never be able to fulfill his true purpose, and become who he was chosen to be.

4. What message is your story designed to convey to the reader? Does it have multiple messages/themes/meanings?

Yes. It is designed to convey many themes, meanings and concepts. However, I will not spell it all out here. I want to see what people get from it.


5. Is a lot left open to interpretation, or are there very specific meanings in your work?
Generally it is open to interpretation, but there are specific meanings that the story has been written with. As to whether or not people arrive at the same conclusions I have, or get out of it what I intended to portray, is really something I can't control.

6. Would you consider your story an allegory?
Yes.

7. List some motifs/symbols in your work and briefly describe each.

Trying not to spoil too much... :P

1. Morality. I'm writing about a world that once had absoultely NO concept of evil and injustice. The language did not even have any words FOR words like "evil". How is "evil" born? Why is it what it is? How is it truly defined?
Some characters in the story do not even believe Zairen is evil, or caused evil- they consider it to be natural, and Zairen's own "interpretation" of a perfect world, and they accept the "curse". In their language (Ostalan), the word "curse" (as it is in Lemaarian) does not carry the same conotation. In fact, their word for "curse" means "blessing", and they believe that Zairen actually freed them.
2. Time and Destiny. Are our courses in time predefined? Are we truly in control of our actions? Are we chosen for things, or do we chose things for ourselves? How do we alter our lives, or how do others alter our lives for us?
3. Love. What is love? (Baby don't hurt me... don't hurt me... no more...) Seriously, though. How is love defined? Should love be defined as a feeling or emotion, or an unconditional choice? How do certain definitions of love affect people? Does it alter them for the better or for the worse?

There's more, but... I won't go there. :P


8. List all of your main characters and describe each in one word significant to their purpose.

I... can't do that. Too much spoiler. ;~;

9. What are your characters based on (yourself, friends/family, humanity in general, specific concepts)?
All of my characters are based off of people I know, or humanity as I observed it.

10. In what way(s) do you incorporate symbolism in your characters?
Everything about my characters represents something, from how it defines who they are, to how they shape the story. Some are small details, such as how they dress, but others are larger, as to their histories and personalities and how they effect what the story represents.

11. Anything else you want to share?

What I want for Age of Mortality to do, is to get people to think outside the box. There is more going on behind the scenes, so try and see what you can come up with and interpret the characters and situations in your own way to figure out the deeper meanings as I post the story. I'm curious to see what people come up with and believe.

There's a huge difference between having an opinion, being reasonable, realistic and mature, and being outright hateful.

Before I continue, lemme say this: I love stamps, I have a lot of opinions that I feel very strongly about. What I'm talking about here, is how people are PRESENTING themselves in their opinions.

I've been looking around the internet lately, at how people respond to each other's actions and opinions, and a few things have been made extremely clear to me.

It's all cool for people to have opinions on something, or to express their mature observations on a few of society's "issues". But please, people, can't you find a way to express your opinions without being ABSOLUTELY HATEFUL to the people you disagree with?

People who dislike the anime style are posting stamps like this all over Deviantart. Direct quotations.

"Manga/chibi ruins everything."

While I sometimes don't care for the style, I've seen some beautiful manga and chibi art. I'm not going to completely throw the entire style out of the window just because it is popular. It is an art style and should be appreciated just as any other, despite the young artists who do not grow out of their comfort zones to experiment with other forms of art. That is the only reason why people are uncomfortable with manga.

"Manga drawers are not artists."

Yes, they are artists. They are creating art, based on what they enjoy. They like manga, and are expressing themselves through it.

"I hate weeaboos."

You're free to dislike the subculture itself, but why *hate* the PEOPLE who participate in the subculture? You can disagree with their subculture but respect the people themselves, can't you?


Those are just some examples out of many.


To continue to another realm of the internet:  failbooking.com is a website dedicated to people taking screenshots of people posting silly or dramatic things on their facebook profiles. People are sometimes very rudely approached on facebook, and the things people say to each other are absolutely *hateful*, and most of the time these hateful comments come from people who are, hand-in-hand, being the "voice of reason". They are praised for their blunt and hateful way of pointing out people's melodrama.


And lastly, don't get me started on Youtube comments . I have never seen more foul-mouthed comments, complete hatred and disrespect, on entirely irrelevant subject matter. My brother sent me an Annoying Orange video recently and I just happened to scroll down... there were such horrible, irrelevant comments there, having nothing to do with Annoying Orange. People were just blasting each other with excessive profanity + unnecessary sexual comments, as if that made themselves sound "superior".


We're a society of hatred, in every realm, both in the psychologically mature and immature. Those who are "mature" bash those they find "immature" with their "superiority" in vocabulary and aged wisdom. The "immature" resort to senseless profanity in hopes to place themselves on an aggressive side.



There is no need for the hatred or aggression in order to have opinions and present arguments.


Because in the long run, does it really MATTER who likes Twilight and who doesn't? Does it really MATTER that you love or hate anime, or wolves, or chibi anthro muticolored animals?

The only thing your opinions on these things are good for is finding new friends, and people who agree with you, to build your circle of friends who share similar interests. NOT a standing ground to argue, flame and otherwise hate someone with a different opinion than you.

This is a foolish hope and wishful thinking, but some days I wish people could just... respect each other, in all different walks of life and interests.

The next game in the "Elder Scrolls" video game series was recently announced and it's Skyrim- my favorite place in Elder Scrolls lore. :D Morrowind and Oblivion are my all-time favorite games and this is just awesome news for me.

I can barely contain my... EXCITEMENT! I LOVE SKYRIM! Nords! NORDS! OOOH! ooooh...

*crosses fingers* Here's to hoping Jeremy Soule returns to compose this one, and that it surpasses Oblivion in terms of immersion and experience.

I figured it's about time I updated this.

I must apologize for not replying to everyone and keeping up with DA. I want to thank everyone in bulk for your happy birthday wishes and I hope to personally say so soon. It means a lot that you all took time out of your day to talk to me and I appreciate it. :D

In other news, I am completely redoing my graphic novel. I have never been completely happy with it and the beginning was going to be re-done anyway. Also, who'd remember a name like "Ailevian"? O.o I wanted to change the name of the story to something easier to remember and more recognizable.

Thus, I renamed the comic, scrapped it all, and am currently working on the new pages! It will come out a LOT faster because I am doing it all in black and white now. Plus, the story has been a bit refined and I think it'll flow better.

I'm sorry if this disappoints anyone, I know you all were looking forward to more story. Rest assured, it will be more fun to read now, you just have to bear with me a while longer until I start releasing the pages.

I feel like I owe my DA friends an explanation.

My inactivity is caused by multiple things in life, but mostly, it is my own fault.

Ailevian fell off the wagon.  Kai fell off the wagon. Art fell off the wagon. Life took over, in all it's hecticness, and I decided to just... put art away for a while.

It wasn't a decision I just CAME to, it just... happened over time. I just became less and less inclined to really draw much, and hey, no one was complaining over here. So I just shrugged my shoulders, figured no one would really be missing it.

But of course, I'm wrong to an extent, I know a lot of my friends who were worried and upset at my sudden lack of art-age and my decline in communication. I owe you all a huge apology and... let me try to pull myself up out of this rut.

Life is slowing down I guess. I just need to manage my time and schedule better. I just hope I can reignite my muse in my world, characters, ect. I have been feeling a depressing drain in passion and, it has multiple sources, which I'm hoping to take care of.

I was happily tagged by *VinnyCrow to this little OC quiz meme thingy. :D Hehehehe I'm glad you remember about Kaikuro enough to mention him :P

This is a little difficult to fill out without spoilers. I may mildly spoil something or drop a breadcrumb, but whatever. The story is so long and I am getting tired of not being able to say so much about Kaikuro's life.

:bulletred: One: *Friendships*  Kaikuro doesn't have a lot of friends, but the ones he does have, he treasures. In the comic he starts out with only one noticable friend, Indara the Dragon (with whom he is extremely close), and then later becomes closer friends with the Sori family. He is unusually loyal, moreso then most people. When he makes a friend, he is ridiculously devoted to them and even if he gets into an argument, he rarely lets it last for very long and always seeks resolution in the quickest and least emotionally-draining way. Because of this sense of devotion, if something bad were to happen to his friend, he will go absolutely ridiculous lengths to try his best to improve their situation, sometimes putting himself in harms way.

:bulletorange: Two: *Combat* Kaikuro is extremely stubborn and is the worst tactician ever. He is impatient when in a stressful situation and his plans are usually of the smash and grab kind. There's no "we need to think this through before we do this!" from him, and this gets him into even bigger messes then what he was already in.

:bulletyellow: Three: *Physical* Since he wears the mask, I believe it is safe for me to say that there is definitely something not right with him. He is half blind and half deaf. However, his Medallion offers a near-constant passive crutch to this, and because he can 'see' out of his Medallion, he wears it level to his natural eye. (Imagine if you had an eye around your neck- that would be really weird perspective!) He's got a thin build, and he is a little bit on the taller side. He is fast and can remember locations and landmarks very easily. His memory isn't photographic like many Raisuranians, but he has a good one all the same, which is, in his opinion, both a blessing and a curse. He has a lot of stamina and determination, but he can't take a whole lot of hits. (If he was an RPG character, he would have a high Endurance/Stamina but low Health and Strength.)

:bulletgreen: Four: *Hobbies* Since one of Kaikuro's hobbies and passions is gardening, his Medallion sometimes assists him in this in supernatural ways. He can bring withered flowers back to life and make fruits and vegetables grow fuller and tastier. This, of course, is an unpredictable gift that happens when his medallion decides to bestow it. It is not a 'passive' gift, so it will glow when this happens. He also loves drawing, and is extremely gifted at live sketches with pen and ink.

:bulletblue: Five: *More on Medallions* Kaikuro's major Medallion gift is Wisdom- it is the characteristic that is focused around him the most. This is incredibly strange, because Kaikuro talks with a stammer. English is not his first language and he can speak, read, and write in his native language Raisuranian. He never learned how to read or write in English. However, since Wisdom is Kaikuro's primary trait and strongest gift, the Medallion will glow and repair his stammer and allow him to read and write. However, it only does this based upon his personal faith, and his faith is very wavery.


:bulletpurple: Six: *Foods* Kaikuro is lactose intolerant and will suffer all of the discomforts that come with lactose intolerance after eating products containing milk. (I really spare this guy no pain or suffering on any level, no matter how embarrassing XD) He is this way because of his Raisuranian heritage- all Raisuranians lack the enzyme lactase. He loves chicken though, and other salty foods. He also likes tart foods. He doesn't like sweets very much, but he does like tarty candy, if he ever decides to spend his hard-earned money on candy every once in a while. Since he's masked though, he never eats in public, which makes him a bit more awkward at social feasts then he already is. He also hates alcohol significantly, which further alienates him since Doumaar is quite full of beers, wines and ales. On top of all this, he's already extremely awkward in public to begin with.

:bulletblack: Seven: *Weaponry* Kaikuro has never hit a target with a bow and arrow without the help of his Medallion for aiming. Without his Medallion acting to help him aim and control how much power he uses, he can't even hit something 2 paces in front of him. Despite this, he makes it fairly well in the winter. His Medallion, however, doesn't always kick in, and he cannot control it. All he can do is have faith.
His preferred weapons, however, are two-handed swords. He prefers them for their size not to attack, but to defend himself and a broader range of his body.

:bulletwhite: Eight: *More stuff* I thought twice before posting this, but it's already in the comic, so what the heck. Kaikuro has not had an 'official' Medallion Ceremony like the one for Cohlen Sori in the comic. Also, his medallion's origins are... more complicated then meets the eye.
